Other people come home from a trip with a fridge magnet. Knitters come home with yarn.
Over a decade ago, my husband and I were touring Bavaria in a rental car, and we spent a few days in Regensburg, a beautiful old city on the Danube.
But what I remember best isn’t the ancient Roman ruins or the Gothic Cathedral. It’s a small yarn shop tucked into the medieval Old Town, the kind of place we secretly build our travel plans around, and I nearly blew the whole travel budget the moment I stepped inside.
I still remember the route from our hotel. Every turn, every narrow street, the exact corner where I nearly walked right past it. All these years later, I could still lead you there with my eyes closed.
Now, one of the skeins from that shop has become the Everglow shawl.

The moment I decided to use it for this design, I was right back on those cobblestone streets.
I’m sure you have yarn like that too, somewhere in your own stash. A skein that isn’t really about the yarn at all. It’s about the place you were, or the person you were with, or just the version of you who bought it.
Maybe it’s not from a trip abroad. Maybe it’s the skein from a shop that’s since closed, or a color you were obsessed with at the time, or the one you bought on pure impulse, and still haven’t found the right project for. It’s still sitting there.
And if that skein happens to be about 400 m / 437 yds of fingering weight, well, this is your sign.
