New shawl Sommelier makes blocking a breeze

Sommelier shawl knitting pattern from Woolenberry

I have a new shawl pattern to share with you!

Sommelier is an airy crescent shawl that plays with the endless possibilities of simple elements – yo and k2tog.

Sommelier is knitted with sport weight yarn in easy-to-memorize patterns.

You can watch Netflix or chat away during a knit-night, without having to constantly refer to the pattern.

This was such a quick knit my shawl was finished before I had time to take any work-in-progress pictures!

Combining garter stitch, eyelets and mesh lace, this modern shawl is relaxing to knit and looks beautiful wrapped around your neck.

I used 2 balls of sport weight De Rerum Natura Ulysse (100% merino; 185 m / 202 yds per 50 g) in the Caramel colourway.

I’ve had this yarn in my stash for years. I received it in a mystery yarn club from TitiTyy yarn shop in 2015. The yarn club had different themes to choose from, and I chose the wine tasting themed colours. Which, if you’ve been with me long enough, shouldn’t come as a surprise :)

To salute the original wine tasting colour theme of the mystery yarn club, I wanted the name of the pattern to reflect that.

The inspiration for the design came to me when I was blocking Thames in the wee hours of the night.

I was sitting on the floor in a dimly lit living room inserting blocking wires to wet wool, and decided to design a shawl that would be super easy to block.

The next morning I began sketching shawls with eyelets on each edge to make inserting the blocking wires a breeze. And one of those sketches turned into Sommelier!

Even though the pattern is written for sport weight yarn, you can easily make it yours by working it with any yarn weight from lace to worsted.

You could easily knit Sommelier as a fingering weight one skein wonder, too.

The pattern includes instructions on how to modify the size for different yarn amounts.

And as with all my recent patterns, the pattern has instructions both in written and charted format.

See Sommelier here. Happy knitting!
