Fire Within: Your new favourite shawl knitting pattern

Fire Within – Large triangle lace shawl knitting pattern

There’s nothing like finding that perfect rhythm on your knitting needles.

The kind that keeps you going long after you meant to stop. Suddenly, dinner’s gone cold, and you’re too wrapped up in the stitches to care.

That’s what Fire Within is all about.

This shawl keeps you engaged from the first cast-on to the final bind-off. It begins with a soothing texture of stockinette and reverse stockinette ridges—simple, steady, and just what you need to unwind. Then, as you’ve found your rhythm, the lace diamond pattern takes over, adding just the right amount of intrigue to keep things exciting.

The result? A piece that will have you saying, “Thanks, I knit this myself” on repeat—whether you’re at brunch, running errands, or stealing the spotlight at your next knit night.

For the sample, I used Knitting For Olive Merino and Soft Silk Mohair together.

They create a beautifully soft, fluffy halo. You’ll need three balls of each to make the same-sized shawl.

Or, if you’re substituting, you’ll need about 650 m / 710 yds of (light) fingering-weight wool yarn and about 630 m / 689 yds of lace-weight mohair yarn.

Not a fan of mohair? No problem. Swap it out for your favourite fingering or DK-weight yarn for a shawl that’s just as stunning.

The size is easy to adjust, so you can make your shawl as big as you want. However, I recommend having at least 600 m / 656 yds to make the most of both stitch patterns.

Fire Within is part of the 2024 Shawl Club, a collection inspired by the elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

Each shawl in the series—Earthsong, Windborne, Untamed Waters, and Fire Within—captures a unique piece of nature’s beauty and brings it to life through your knitting.

Ready to lose yourself in a project that sparks joy with every stitch?

Fire Within is waiting for you in the 2024 Shawl Club. Let’s cast on.

The mess of making

Effortless knitting patterns for the modern maker – Woolenberry

Are you obsessed with perfection in your knitting?

That polished shawl, the crisp edges, every stitch lining up just right.

Or cussing over that tiny faux pas in your lace repeat, which, by the way, is invisible to anyone but you.

But where’s the fun in stressing over perfection?

Think back to when you first started knitting.

I bet it had nothing to do with getting everything just right. And everything to do with getting lost in the rhythm, feeling the yarn between your fingers, and letting your curiosity lead the way.

That spark? That’s where the magic lives.

Creativity thrives in the in-between moments. The messy swatches, the tangled yarn, even the stitches that somehow end up with a life of their own.

Next time you sit down with your needles, lean into the beautiful, unpredictable mess of making. Let go of the ‘shoulds’ and let your hands lead the way.

Knitting isn’t about ticking all the boxes—perfect pattern, right yarn, flawless finish. It’s about that delicious, meditative flow you get lost in along the way.

Embrace the journey. The outcome will always follow.

Worsted-weight lace shawl? Yes, please!

Afterglow – Worsted weight lace shawl knitting pattern

When it comes to stitch patterns, chevron lace is the crème de la crème in my book.

It’s the epitome of timeless—the motif dating all the way back to ancient Greece, yet still looking as fresh and chic as ever.

The lace is meditative to knit, and creates an effortlessly striking look.

But the best part? From the moment your needles start moving, it’s impossible to put down.

Watching those zigzags form is like bingeing your favourite show—you just have to keep going.

And that’s what Afterglow shawl is all about.

It’s the kind of project that makes you want to cancel your plans, settle into your favourite spot, and knit non-stop.

I knitted mine with Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage in colour Tart.

You’ll need about 364 m / 400 yds of worsted-weight yarn for a same-sized shawl.

Or, grab more yarn and make yours bigger. The size is easy to adjust to fit your preferences or yarn amount.

Your most pressing stash issue, solved

Velvet Moss shawl pattern for one skein of fingering weight yarn

You know you’re a knitter when…

You’ve accumulated quite a stash of single skeins—yarns you couldn’t resist buying because they were simply too beautiful to leave behind, even without a specific project in mind.

Now, those stunning skeins sit there, waiting for the perfect project to bring out their full potential.

Well, my friend, the Velvet Moss shawl is exactly what you need!

This asymmetric triangle shawl features an allover lace pattern that’s not only gorgeous but also a joy to knit.

The lace is worked only on the right side and looks much more complex than it actually is. Plus, there’s no purling involved!

I knitted mine with one skein of Malabrigo Yarn Sock (100% merino wool; 402 m / 440 yds per 100 g).

You’ll need about 402 m / 440 yds of similar fingering weight yarn for a same-sized shawl.

Here’s why Velvet Moss shawl is a must-knit:

  • Intuitive lace: The allover lace is easy to memorise and quickly becomes second nature.
  • Effortless knitting: You work the lace only on the right side rows, and there’s no purling
  • One skein shawl: Perfect for that special skein of fingering weight yarn in your stash.
  • Adjustable size: The size is easy to adjust to different yarn amounts. You can use every last inch of your precious skein. Or gather more yarn and make the shawl as big as you want!

Whether you’re an adventurous lace beginner or a seasoned knitting pro, Velvet Moss is both a relaxing and engaging project.

Remove knitting from your to-do list

Quiet Days – Easy rectangle shawl knitting pattern with garter stitch and eyelets.

Has knitting become another task on your to-do list?

Here’s the thing: you didn’t pick up those needles because you needed another project to finish.

You knit because it’s a moment of stillness in a hectic world—a chance to breathe, be present, and create something beautiful.

But somewhere along the way, we’ve all felt that subtle pressure: How many projects did I finish this month? Is this shawl taking too long?

What if I’m falling behind? (Spoiler: You’re not.)

There’s a certain kind of magic in knitting slowly, in taking your time with every stitch just because it feels good.

Let yourself linger over the feel of the yarn, get lost in the rhythm, and let go of the need to “get it done.”

This craft is as much about the process as the end result—maybe more.

Next time you reach for your knitting, remind yourself: there’s no rush. This isn’t a race.

Knit because it fills your cup, not because you need to cross something off a list. Your needles, your pace, your joy.

Knitting is meant to bring you pleasure, not pressure. So, let’s reclaim that simple joy. Set aside the productivity mindset and let yourself just enjoy.

Sound good? Quiet Days is the perfect pattern for getting lost in the rhythm of slow, meditative stitches.

Wine and knitting: Multitasking at its finest

Still Waters – Easy one skein shawl knitting pattern with simple lace and garter stitch

Knitting with a glass of wine? Now that’s my kind of high-level multitasking.

Some might call it indulgent, but I prefer to think of it as embracing the finer things in life—crafting and relaxing, all at once.

Sure, it’s basically enjoying life with a fancy label slapped on it, but who’s complaining? The real challenge is finding the sweet spot—making sure you don’t get too distracted by the stitches or the sips.

Looking for a project to go along with your multitasking? Still Waters shawl is exactly what you need.

This pattern is the perfect combination of soothing and satisfying—ideal for when you’re balancing a cosy evening of knitting and unwinding.

Untamed Waters shawl knitting pattern has arrived, ready to take you on a journey.

I knitted mine with Novita Soft Merino 4 Ply (100% Merino wool, 200 m / 218 yds per 50 g).

You’ll need around 580 m / 635 yds of similar fingering-weight yarn to make your own. The result? A shawl that drapes beautifully and wraps you in warmth as the days get shorter.
